Screen Protective Film. Why should you use it?

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Here at Photodon.com we offer many different screen sizes of our screen protective film, as well as several different film types of screen protectors. On the main film page we suggest reasons as to why it’s a good idea to use screen protective film. However, more than a few people have absolutely no idea why screen protective film is so great.

So let me tell you why it *is* such a good idea to protect your screen:
If you have children, pets, multiple users, a touch screen, or you’re on the go with your devices, you really should consider protecting your screens with screen protective film!
It has a hard PET plastic material that will protect your screen from daily abuse! The H3 Hard coat finish does not easily scratch or mar with normal use.
The silicone adhesive is safe to apply to your screen as it will never leave behind a sticky residue when you do go to remove the film some day.

I’ve dropped my laptop on a gravel driveway, fell backward into my flat panel LCD TV with vacuum attachments in hand, gotten makeup on my cell phone and I’ve banged up my digital camera on various trips and adventures. Have I mentioned that my baby boy will be 2 this June? Need I say more?!
Replacing my screens is more than I can afford so I take comfort in the fact my screens have screen protective film on them. If the film gets scratched or gunked up, I can afford to replace the screen film much easier than I can the screen.

LeapTop
This precious little boy is reason enough to protect all of my screens!
This screen is sport’n the Crystal Clear screen protective film.

Application of the film
It does require patience, a clean screen and don’t wear linty clothing. My film best applies when I am wearing a cotton t-shirt and using finger cots (most prefer latex free gloves like the ones offered in our film installation kit).

So why should you use screen protective film? To protect your screens! To keep your device operating properly longer! Crystal Clear or Anti Glare: apply to your screen and ease the stress of potentially damaging your screen.

So there’s another question:
Which film should I order, Anti Glare or Crystal Clear?
Well this is a personal preference and it depends on where you’ll be viewing your screen the most and what you do on your computer or media. I prefer to use the Anti Glare film at home because my house has a lot of natural light.

People using their computer for color critical situations such as photo editing or graphic designing, have reported that the Anti Glare alters the colors slightly and was visually too noisy for them so they preferred the Crystal Clear screen protective film. Depends on your situation and what you like. Both films do a great job of protecting your screen.

Who Uses a Monitor Hood Anyway?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Computer monitor hoods

A great tool for photographers needing a digital darkroom, a testing facility looking to keep test scores honest and for the airport, bank or doctor’s office where sensitive information needs to be kept private.

Computer monitor hoods are also great for the every day user who may sit under bright florescent lighting or near a sunny/bright window. Reducing/eliminating the glare on your screen makes your data is easier to read and reduces your risk for CVS (computer vision syndrome).

Ultimately a monitor hood will make you more alert and focused on your work – not on the eye strain and headaches that come with fighting glare on your screen. It helps reduce fatigue.

Computer Monitor Hood

You’ve got options!

When ordering your monitor hood from us you have a few choices:
One is a calibration door. This is a small sliding door that can be built with your hood (made to fit your monitor!) This door allows you to drop down your calibration spider to, well, calibrate your display image!!

Instead of removing the entire hood and replacing it once you have the spider in place, you will literally “open the door” to a smarter way of calibrating, creating the digital darkroom that works!

If you need the sides of the hood shortened or made longer, we’ll make it so!

Need your hood a little deeper than what we offer? How about a little less deep? We can take care of that too!

Our hoods have options that you can choose from right on the product page. It’s like building your very own unique hood yourself!

Didn’t find what you were looking for in our hood selection?

Don’t despair!
We can custom build a hood for you! Be sure to get a hold of us to work with our capable and knowledgeable Team. We’re always happy to help you!

So who uses a computer monitor hood?

Maybe *you* should!

  • Do you find yourself squinting to see past the glare on your screen?
  • After an hour or two at your computer do your eyes get tired?
  • Does working on your computer give you a headache?
  • Is the lighting in your office bright and hard to avoid?
  • Are you working with private information?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you may want to consider a computer monitor hood!

We also carry Privacy Shields which give you glare reduction and privacy just like a hood but without the total coverage of a Monitor Hood.

As always if you have questions, post on our FaceBook wall!

Choosing a Screen Protective Film

Friday, February 25th, 2011

So lately we’ve been getting a lot of questions about our screen protective films. We strive to have a lot of information on our main protective film page but with *so* much information all in one place it’s hard to absorb all of it! So today let’s cover a question that is asked pretty much everyday:

“Which type of film should I order?”

Please keep in mind that there is a section available on our website as well for all of the FAQ’s on Screen Film.

Touch Screen:

If you have a touch screen with a slight glare is an issue, our MXH film is a great choice! It’s thin enough not to interfere with your touch screen capability and it has a hint of anti glare finish to it and it protects your screen as well.

Big glare issue? We suggest MXT anti glare film with your touch screen as it has a strong anti glare finish to it and protects your screen as well.

Touch screensThe cons about the MXT film are that it isn’t recommended for color critical work and it tends to cause slight speckling especially on devises with a glass front.

No glare issue, but you want screen protection? We offer crystal clear film (MXA) that is also thin enough to work well with touch screens and since you’ll be touching the film instead of your screen the life and health of your screen are better ensured.

Every circumstance is unique, your devise and usage all play a factor in what type of film is right for you. (We’ll talk about our other film the MXS in just a minute.)

Tablets and their pens

If you have a tablet PC the MXH and MXT work great with a stylistic pen. They give the feel of paper under the tip of the pen. If you’re not looking for the anti glare finish and are just looking to protect your tablet, MXA Crystal Clear film works smoothly under your pen. It does have a high glass finish to it. This film will slightly improve the image of your screen.

Displays with Glass Fronts

Screens with a glass covering over the actual screen will also require a thinner film. When the anti glare film isn’t right up against the image it can cause distortion/pixeling. The thinner the film the closer it is to the actual the image. The same about the anti glare applies here too; depending on what type of light situation you have will help you determine the strength of anti glare coating that you’ll need. Our suggestions for displays with glass fronts: MXH and MXT for glare situations, MXH if you’re only looking to only protect the screen and do not need the anti glare coating.

Non Touch Screens and Anti Glare Film

Anti glare protective film for a non touch screen, (something like a TV, or a standard computer monitor or laptop) you would do fine with a thicker anti glare film like our MXS film.
MXS film offers the best anti glare effect and will protect your screen. When you’re applying film to a larger screen it’s beneficial to work with another person assisting you. Thicker material won’t bend the film if it were to gently bend backward during installation.

What is the difference between Crystal Clear and Anti Glare?

Photodon’s Crystal Clear / High Contrast screen protective film: MXA, has a glossy finish and smooth surface. The benefits of this film are that it offers great protection from scratching or marring and it slightly improves the image underneath it.

Our Anti Glare / Non Glare screen protective film: MXH, MXT & MXS, have a matte finish that will prevent harsh lighting from bouncing off the screen and into your eyes. This is what we also call Anti Reflective.

Anti Glare film applied

Reducing the glare off your screen has been proven to decrease your risk of CVS (computer vision syndrome). It also helps you view your display! That’s a plus right? So if you’re outdoors, on the road in the car, working next to a window or under strong overhead office lighting, using an anti glare film will be very beneficial. The biggest drawback with that anti glare film is that our MXT and MXS films are not recommended for color critical applications as they can slightly change the colors, , (ie: people working in photo or design workshops). The film tends to be cause pixelling when placed over devises with glass fronts and can potentially pose an issue. Another option to help those fighting glare is a computer monitor hood.

Please note that anti glare film is not for reducing your *screen’s* brightness! It is not a brightness reducer it only helps diffuse light that is being reflected off of your screen; not the light from your screen.

So in short, Crystal Clear is completely clear and has a glossy finish. Anti Glare has a matte finish and will keep light from reflecting off your screen. All screen protective films will protect your screen from scratches and other accidental boo boos that can happen to a screen. These films really do take the abuse of everyday use!

Please follow this link for more detailed information about film types.
Compare film specs side by side and you can see for yourself that I’m telling the truth!!

If you have a question about our screen protective films that wasn’t listed today please don’t hesitate to ask! Feel free to post a comment below! Or if you’re on FaceBook please post your question on our wall! There may be someone else with your same question and they too would benefit from you making the first move.

Prevent Eye Strain/CVS

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

Cut out the glare and reduce your eye strain!

“Eye strain does not have serious or long-term consequences, but it can be disruptive and unpleasant” says the Mayo Clinic. “It can make you tiered and reduce your ability to concentrate.”

Eye strain (also known as Asthenopia) is caused by overuse of the eyes. Examples of overuse are reading for long periods of time, focusing too long at a computer screen or other tedious visual tasks. Eye strain caused by staring at the computer screen for too long is called Computer Vision Syndrome (also known as CVS).

CVS symptoms are:

  • blurred vision
  • headaches
  • neck and shoulder pains
  • dry inflamed eyes

CVS is said to affect some 90% of people who sit in front of a computer screen for 3+ hours a day. According to PRIO (a company that specializes in CVS testing and prevention), because a computer screen is made up of pixels (tiny glowing dots that make up an image or text) your eyes are constantly trying to refocus. Without defined edges or background contrast, your eyes cannot lock the image into focus. Here at Photodon.com we offer products to help you reduce your rick for eye strain/ CVS. Anti glare screen protective film and computer monitor hoods are a couple of our products that will reduce surrounding light from causing glare on your screen.

The following are some helpful tips to help prevent eyestrain:

  • It is important to look away from your screen every 20mins and focus on an object that is at least 20ft away for at least 20 seconds. This method as known as “20-20-20”
  • Take time to rest your eyes. In a relaxed position gently close your eyes to rest and naturally moisten them.
  • Remember to blink! The average blink rate for humans is 16-20 blinks per minute. Studies show that rate decreases to as low as 6-8 blinks per minute for people working at a computer screen.
  • Adjust the contrast of your computer screen and turn the brightness levels down. The levels will vary for every individual but keep in mind that too little contrast will cause your eyes to try to focus harder which can also cause eye strain.
  • Keep your eyes hydrated! Although blinking and resting your eyes will help naturally moisten your eyes, it may not be enough to keep them from drying out. There are many different brands of artificial tears that can help keep proper moisture.

Some people have found computer monitor hoods to be quite helpful in that they block over head and side lighting from bouncing off the screen causing glare. Our monitor hoods are manufactured here in the USA. The material is dark high quality, pressed fiber board that offers a smooth black texture that will absorb light.

Another helpful product is anti glare screen protective film. We offer top of the line screen protective film made from a PET material that adheres to your screen with safe rubber silicon. This anti glare film gives the screen a matte look which helps cut the glare down from surrounding lights.

Please keep in mind that these are only suggestions. These solutions have helped many people but that doesn’t guarantee that they will be successful for you. For serious vision concerns/issues, headaches, blurred vision and fatigue, contact your physician/eye care professional.
