Choosing a Screen Protective Film

Friday, February 25th, 2011

So lately we’ve been getting a lot of questions about our screen protective films. We strive to have a lot of information on our main protective film page but with *so* much information all in one place it’s hard to absorb all of it! So today let’s cover a question that is asked pretty much everyday:

“Which type of film should I order?”

Please keep in mind that there is a section available on our website as well for all of the FAQ’s on Screen Film.

Touch Screen:

If you have a touch screen with a slight glare is an issue, our MXH film is a great choice! It’s thin enough not to interfere with your touch screen capability and it has a hint of anti glare finish to it and it protects your screen as well.

Big glare issue? We suggest MXT anti glare film with your touch screen as it has a strong anti glare finish to it and protects your screen as well.

Touch screensThe cons about the MXT film are that it isn’t recommended for color critical work and it tends to cause slight speckling especially on devises with a glass front.

No glare issue, but you want screen protection? We offer crystal clear film (MXA) that is also thin enough to work well with touch screens and since you’ll be touching the film instead of your screen the life and health of your screen are better ensured.

Every circumstance is unique, your devise and usage all play a factor in what type of film is right for you. (We’ll talk about our other film the MXS in just a minute.)

Tablets and their pens

If you have a tablet PC the MXH and MXT work great with a stylistic pen. They give the feel of paper under the tip of the pen. If you’re not looking for the anti glare finish and are just looking to protect your tablet, MXA Crystal Clear film works smoothly under your pen. It does have a high glass finish to it. This film will slightly improve the image of your screen.

Displays with Glass Fronts

Screens with a glass covering over the actual screen will also require a thinner film. When the anti glare film isn’t right up against the image it can cause distortion/pixeling. The thinner the film the closer it is to the actual the image. The same about the anti glare applies here too; depending on what type of light situation you have will help you determine the strength of anti glare coating that you’ll need. Our suggestions for displays with glass fronts: MXH and MXT for glare situations, MXH if you’re only looking to only protect the screen and do not need the anti glare coating.

Non Touch Screens and Anti Glare Film

Anti glare protective film for a non touch screen, (something like a TV, or a standard computer monitor or laptop) you would do fine with a thicker anti glare film like our MXS film.
MXS film offers the best anti glare effect and will protect your screen. When you’re applying film to a larger screen it’s beneficial to work with another person assisting you. Thicker material won’t bend the film if it were to gently bend backward during installation.

What is the difference between Crystal Clear and Anti Glare?

Photodon’s Crystal Clear / High Contrast screen protective film: MXA, has a glossy finish and smooth surface. The benefits of this film are that it offers great protection from scratching or marring and it slightly improves the image underneath it.

Our Anti Glare / Non Glare screen protective film: MXH, MXT & MXS, have a matte finish that will prevent harsh lighting from bouncing off the screen and into your eyes. This is what we also call Anti Reflective.

Anti Glare film applied

Reducing the glare off your screen has been proven to decrease your risk of CVS (computer vision syndrome). It also helps you view your display! That’s a plus right? So if you’re outdoors, on the road in the car, working next to a window or under strong overhead office lighting, using an anti glare film will be very beneficial. The biggest drawback with that anti glare film is that our MXT and MXS films are not recommended for color critical applications as they can slightly change the colors, , (ie: people working in photo or design workshops). The film tends to be cause pixelling when placed over devises with glass fronts and can potentially pose an issue. Another option to help those fighting glare is a computer monitor hood.

Please note that anti glare film is not for reducing your *screen’s* brightness! It is not a brightness reducer it only helps diffuse light that is being reflected off of your screen; not the light from your screen.

So in short, Crystal Clear is completely clear and has a glossy finish. Anti Glare has a matte finish and will keep light from reflecting off your screen. All screen protective films will protect your screen from scratches and other accidental boo boos that can happen to a screen. These films really do take the abuse of everyday use!

Have you tried the new MXH Screen Protective Film?

Friday, August 13th, 2010
We’re happy to introduce our latest Screen Protective Film, MXH.
It’s the cats’ meow!!
It reduces fingerprints smudges on the screen as well as leaving the image very crisp and this film will reduces the glare by 25%.
This film is ideal for:

  • touch screens
  • screen with glass fronts
Out of all the anti-glare films that we have to offer, the MXH film offers the least visual noise. This helps those of you who were bothered by the pixeling of our other films on certain applications.
This film has the same 3H hardness surface coating and silicon resign adhesion of our other films, so it is still an excellent film for protecting your screen.
The anti-glare properties of this film are the lowest of all our anti-glare films but the image quality is better than the MXS and MXT anti-glare films.

“Which Film Type Do I Need?”

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Since everyone has their own unique situations, applications and preferences, we offer a few different types of screen protective film. We hope that this will help make it easier for you to choose your  film type.

  • If glare is an issue and you have a non-touch screen display, our MXS film type is what you’ll want to choose. It is a thicker, non-glare film which will protect your display and cut down bothersome light reflections.
  • Touch screen displays with glare issues would require a thinner film as to not interfere with the touch capabilities. We suggest our MXT type film. It shares the same anti-reflective properties as the MXS but is slightly thinner.
  • Our MXA film type is a crystal clear film that offers protection and works great on most touch screen applications. If you’re not concerned with cutting down glare but would like an inexpensive way to protect your investment, this is it.

For more detailed information about film types, see our Film Type Comparison chart. You can also visit our main film page for further information and a list of the benefits that screen protective film has to offer.

5 Good Reasons to have a Monitor Hood

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Monitor Hood Benefits:

  • 1.) Creating a shaded environment helps to achieve screen color consistency for accurate and reliable color calibration for color-critical applications such as computer graphics and desktop publishing. Photodon monitor hoods mentioned in Photo Techniques Magazine, Sept/Oct 2003, article “Calibrating the Digital Darkroom”
  • 2.) Most office environments are lit from above with fluorescent lights, which are great for the reading of paper documents. The same lighting causes screen image washout and a loss of screen contrast. The monitor hood is most effective in reducing this type of ambient (surrounding) light and creates a shaded environment.
  • 3.) Light streaming in through windows can cause screen washout, depending on monitor position. Screen washout may only occur for a few minutes a day but sometimes lasts for up to several hours. The length and quality of washouts can change daily and with the shifting of the seasons.
  • 4.) A monitor hood provides privacy, especially in areas where computers are side by side, such as in libraries, computer labs, cyber-cafes, classrooms and the workplace. Also, in an area where sensitive materials and documents are handled, such as banks and law offices, a hood will keep confidential information secure in sensitive environments.
  • 5.) Reducing the amount of glare on your screen can help reduce eyestrain. Because the eyes play such a large roll in processing information for the screen viewer, any reduction in screen glare can have health benefits including a reduction in eyestrain, fatigue and headaches.

We offer adjustable Monitor Hoods which can be customized to fit your specific needs. We also offer many Hoods to fit iMac, Apple Cinemas, and Hoods for laptops. Visit our Monitor Hood page for more information or to make a purchase. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us! Glare Reduction Ideas:

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

You can check screen surface reflections by looking into your screen with the monitor off. These reflections, which include an image of yourself, can obscure the screen image you want to see, causing unnecessary distractions. Observe and implement as many of these glare reduction ideas as possible:

  • Wear darker clothing. Lighter colored clothing reflects more light, creating a reflection on the screen.
  • Place the monitor so that the brightest light sources are off to the side and not directly behind the user.
  • Close shades or curtains.
  • Turn off overhead lights or any lights that are directly behind the user.
  • An individual task light may replace other lights, but be sure that it does not shine onto the screen or your eyes.
  • A glare-reducing screen is also an option but be sure it does not affect the overall screen brightness, especially of the on screen whites. Or, if you’re concerned about color calibration, make sure the screen isn’t tinted.
  • Tilting the screen slightly downward also helps in reducing reflections but may not be ergonomically correct, unless you raise the monitor up.
  • A hood, such as the one offered by Photodon, is a great solution, especially if reducing the amount of light is not possible. (thought I might just throw that in.) A hood can effectively reduce the amount of ambient light from the sides and above from reaching the surface of the screen.

Visit our website for even more ways to help reduce bothersome screen glaring. We offer many sizes of Screen Protective Films, (available in Anti-Glare) and Monitor Hoods.
