Different Uses for Microfiber Cloths

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

As far as my favorite cleaning tools go,
Microfiber Cloths are right up there with my vacuum!

If you missed my last blog: Why you *should* be using Microfiber to clean, take a second to read over what makes a Microfiber Cloth so efficient. Visit our Microfiber Cloths page to learn more.

On our website we promote Screen Care Products

Uses of Microfiber Cloths

Today I’m going to share some of the different/non-traditional uses for Microfiber Cloths. Some are my own but a lot of them come from other folks who have shared with us their own ways of cleaning with microfiber cloth.

I honestly can’t think of a better way to serve up these ideas other than to list them off to you.
So here we go!

Microfiber Cloths Are Great for:

  • Watches and jewelry
  • In the shower or bath (great for kids and babies!)
  • Car detailing
  • Gun care
  • Scuba gear cleaning
  • Fish tank maintenance
  • Use as dish rag
  • Bike equipment
  • Kids’ toys
  • Buffing finger smudges from photo prints
  • Pet care equipment
  • Home medical tools (like thermometers)
  • Polishing bowling balls
  • Trophy cleaning
  • Shoe care

There are so many great uses for this remarkable material!

One really handy and neat use for our #360 Suede Microfiber is to lay it flat on the keyboard of your laptop. The cloth is thin enough that you can close the laptop leaving the cloth inside. This will protect your screen if the keys tend to rub the screen as they do on some laptops when closed.

To clean delicate surfaces I would recommend a tightly woven or suede like microfiber cloth. Also a suede microfiber cloth works well for polishing smooth surfaces.
Suede Microfiber Cloth

When using microfiber cloths such as our bubble looped microfiber or checkered weave microfiber as a wash rag in the shower or for washing dishes, a thicker soft microfiber is nice and soft on the skin.

Don’t forget! Using Microfiber cloths vs. something like a paper towel helps keep more waste out of the landfills as they are washable and re-usable! Go Green! Remember we’re borrowing this earth from our children.

If you have any questions about this Blog or would like to share your uses for Microfiber Cloths, please post a comment at the bottom of this blog or go to our FaceBook Fan page and share your thoughts and ideas on our wall! We’d love to hear them and I’m sure others would too! Thanks for reading!

Why you *should* be using Microfiber to clean.

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

The average “normal” cleaning rag pushes dust and dirt around, causing smearing or even worse scratching.

The Microfiber cloth grabs dust/grime particles and soaks away liquid (even oil) with its fantastic wicking action. Microfiber has a tendency to become electro statically charged which also helps with attracting/removing dust, hair and little “fuzzies”. This material works wonderfully dry but is a whole other experience when dampened with water or a cleaner. Depending on what you’re trying to “sparkle up” will determine if your cloth should be wet or dry.

So what makes Microfiber so effective?

Microfiber is a blend of two materials: polyesters and polyamides. There are two different ways that microfiber is woven together. One is the “flat” weave. This weave repels water and is used in the textile industry for making water resistant clothing, watchbands, etc. Not ideal for a cleaning cloth at all since it will only push partials around and not absorb them.

To be effective for cleaning microfiber must be “split” during processing. This method consists of actually splitting the polyester (the scrubbing fiber) from the polymide (the absorbing and quick drying fiber).

Once the Microfiber is split, the fibers are woven into a fabric; the percentage of material normally consists of 70% to 80% polyester and 20% to 30% polyamide, depending on the style of fabric construction.

The polyester and polyamide are combined during weaving creating hundreds of thousands of microscopic “loops”. This web like formation of “loops” grabs hold of dust, grime, dirt, oil and traps it within the weave making this material a one of the safest cleaning tools in your cabinet! This weave makes the material non abrasive which makes Microfiber ideal for gently “buffing” dirt off from delicate surfaces such as glass or LCD screens. Since most Microfiber is lint free, your results will be a streak free clean. Microfiber can remove nicotine, fingerprints, dust… I’ve even had it remove toothpaste! (On my bathroom mirror, not my computer screen lol Although I’m sure it would take it off of that too!).

The absorbency of Microfiber is quite impressive as it holds up to seven times it weight in liquid! With a couple of firm wrings this material is ready to mop up until the mess is gone. Because of its special loop weave, the Microfiber is quick to dry. In fact this material dries in 1/3 of the time of ordinary cleaning cloths.

Why we call it “green”

Microfiber is a washable re-useable product which is why we call it “green”. With a mild detergent you can toss your cloths into the washing machine and even into the dryer. Just be sure to never ever use a fabric softener! Using a fabric softener can weaken the static charge of the filaments and reduce the effectiveness of your cloth. So it is okay to fluff them up – just keep those fun little smelly sheets off of them. You can wash your Microfiber cloths up to 500 times!

I myself wash my cloths in the washer but I always air dry my Microfiber cloths but I’ve known folks who have been very pleased with the result of the dryer.

We offer many different weaves of Microfiber cloths. Cloths to clean lenses and smaller screens, cloths to clean larger screens like Computer monitors, TV’s, etc. We also carry general purpose cloths that work great on other surfaces.

Also available on our website is our Sample Cloth Packs for you to trial a few of our Microfiber Cloths without a large commitment. These kits come in two forms: one is for Smaller Screens and Lenses Microfiber Samples and the other is for Larger Screens and General Purpose Microfiber Samples.

My next blog I’ll share with you my own list of everything I (and some other fun folks) clean using a microfiber cloth. It’s actually a pretty big listbut it is a pretty amazing material!

Which Microfiber Cloth Should I Choose?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Often times you hear about how wonderful a microfiber cloth is but seldom do you know exactly what to use it on/for.

You’ll find that the biggest key factor when choosing a cloth is the “lint” level of the material. Cloths that are tightly woven or looped woven, normally are a low lint cloth. These are ideal for screen cleaning, or delicate surface cleaning.

Cloths that have cut fibers instead of loops tend to be quite linty as they are sheered at the ends.
This material is best used on general surfaces such a counter tops, equipment polishing, dusting and so on.

Below is a table that will hopefully help clarify the difference between the different weaves and textures.

Texture Feels like Lint Factor Uses
Silky Textures Silky, Smooth, Fine Very low lint. Loop, tight weave Lenses, Large & Small Screens, Glass, Jewelry, CD’s, DVD’s, etc.
Suede Textures Suede like, Soft, Thick Low lint. Better after one wash Critical screen cleaning, Cameras, Glass, GPS’s, etc.
Terry Textures/Large Loop weave Terry cloth towel, soft, thick Very linty due to the cut-weave material General hard surfaces, Automotive, General cleaning
Pattern Textures Depends on the material: some are the silky or more of thick cloth like the suede Very little to very low lint with most Cloths with a pattern (ex: our “Bubble” Microfiber Cloth #355) usually have a better ability to scoop up dust and debris since they have a “groove” to lock the particles in to.

One of the coolest characteristics about the microfiber cloth is that you can clean a smudgy/dirty surface with your cloth dampened by only water! And they’re so eco friendly because they’re washable! Cutting down on waste, helping you to help save the planet!

We do offer many different microfiber cloths, but it’s up to you in which you like best.
If you still don’t know which cloth type to order, feel free to contact us!

Our Goal

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Here at Photodon.com, we strive to offer quality products at affordable prices.

Before a product is added to our store, we test it in our offices, in our workshops, at our homes, at our family and friend’s homes; sometimes we even send out samples in exchange for consumer feedback.
If it doesn’t fly with us, we won’t even try to sell it to you! And believe me, we’ve tested quite a bit of product!
What we put forward is what we know to be the best, and our customers deserve the best.

There are a lot of businesses out there that offer specialty cleaners, microfiber cloths, monitor hoods, and screen protective film. So we’re working hard to give you good enough reason to shop our store and keep you coming back.

Although good products at good prices is only “a piece of the pie”. Our customer service staff is friendly and accommodating. If you ever have a question or concern about a product, your order, or how we do business, a real, live, person will answer your call or respond to your email.
If there is a problem, we’ll go out of our way to make it right.
Your satisfaction matters to us. YOU matter to us. You’re not an order number here! You’re a very important part of how we run our online store and you’ll always be appreciated for stopping by.

We have the ability of fulfilling large orders, and custom orders, but we want to give that small town store feel when you’re doing business with us.

Remember we’re always opened to suggestions! Follow us on Twitter, Like us of Facebook, or contact us via phone or email. We’d love to hear from you.

Everyone Wants to be “Green”

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

These days most of us are looking for ways to do just about everything a little “greener”.
We know it’s the little things that, (in the long run), will make a big impact.

Here at Photodon.com, we’re always looking for more ways to do our part in keeping a cleaner environment.

So if you’re curious as to why the box that we shipped your order in looks like it was used before, it probably was; or why we used newspaper for packaging instead of a plastic mold, we have a lot of people giving us their old papers.
These are our “little things” that we practice to do our part for “greener” tomorrows.

We also want to help YOU do your part so we offer products like microfiber cloths, natural cleaning solutions and longer lasting screen protective films.

Not everything we offer is as “green” as we would like, so we ask you to be responsible when discarding used products.

Remember to reuse spray bottles or recycle them where such plastics are accepted.
Use your lens wipes until they’re dry and make sure they’re disposed of in the proper baskets.

We’ve found the US EPA (United Sates Environmental Protection Agency) to be a very good source of information for where to recycle everything from plastics to used electronics! We suggest you bookmark this site as they are a very useful resource on how to care/help the environment.

We follow and feature some great folks who are wonderful advocates for recycling and for the environment, so come check them out on our Twitter and FaceBook pages.

Thank you for following this and all our blogs! Your feedback has been absolutely refreshing and we appreciate the time you take to leave your comments. We hope this week’s blog was useful to you!

Cleaning Tips for Microfiber Cloths:

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

One of the advantages of microfiber cloth is that they can be washed and reused over and over literally hundreds of times. So here are a few tips for cleaning:

For non-critical cleaning, you can wash cloths with normal wash machine load just avoid washing with anything that might be linty. Also, do not use bleach or fabric softeners in the washer or dryer. Air drying is a safe bet, but they can be safely dried at low heat in clothes dryer.

For more critical cleaning, wash the cloths separately either by hand or in a wash machine in warm water, adding a small amount of detergent. Do not use any bleach or fabric softener and rinse at least one extra time. Air dry or use a clothes dryer on low heat using no fabric softener.

To sanitize: A microfiber cloth may be boiled for 5-10 minutes to eliminate any bacteria that may form in the fibers. Microfiber cloths do an excellent job of picking up dust and removing smudges. They will even remove oily finger prints from a surface without spreading it around, without any additional cleaners.

For more information about Microfiber Cleaning Cloths, you can visit our website, www.photodon.com, or contact us via telephone or email. We’re also on FaceBook so come write on our wall! Someone else may have the same question.

History of Microfiber Cloths: Part 2

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Product #355-1212-2

When combined, (microfiber and nylon), result in a microfiber cloth with the advantages of both synthetics. Too much nylon will result in a cloth that will scratch fine or delicate surfaces, like coated optics or fine wood or paint finishes. Too little nylon and the cloth will not last or clean rough surfaces without rapid deterioration. It is this perfect combination of microfiber and nylon that give these cleaning cloths their special properties.

Each filament of this subminiature fiber, which is much thinner than a human hair, is split into many wedge shaped strands, multiplying the surface area of and the osmosis/wicking power of each filament. With the proper combination of materials and the splitting of the already super fine fibers, these unique microfiber cleaning materials are created.
These fibers can be made into several types of cloths for different uses depending on how these fibers are knitted or woven together.

Microfiber works great when dry but even better if dampened with water or paired up with your favorite cleaning solution.
And because you can wash these cloths they will save you and our Earth a lot of “green”!

Next week we will conclude our short series on Microfiber Cloths with tips on how to care for your cloths.
