“Which Film Type Do I Need?”

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Since everyone has their own unique situations, applications and preferences, we offer a few different types of screen protective film. We hope that this will help make it easier for you to choose your  film type.

  • If glare is an issue and you have a non-touch screen display, our MXS film type is what you’ll want to choose. It is a thicker, non-glare film which will protect your display and cut down bothersome light reflections.
  • Touch screen displays with glare issues would require a thinner film as to not interfere with the touch capabilities. We suggest our MXT type film. It shares the same anti-reflective properties as the MXS but is slightly thinner.
  • Our MXA film type is a crystal clear film that offers protection and works great on most touch screen applications. If you’re not concerned with cutting down glare but would like an inexpensive way to protect your investment, this is it.

For more detailed information about film types, see our Film Type Comparison chart. You can also visit our main film page for further information and a list of the benefits that screen protective film has to offer.

Glare Reduction Ideas:

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

You can check screen surface reflections by looking into your screen with the monitor off. These reflections, which include an image of yourself, can obscure the screen image you want to see, causing unnecessary distractions. Observe and implement as many of these glare reduction ideas as possible:

  • Wear darker clothing. Lighter colored clothing reflects more light, creating a reflection on the screen.
  • Place the monitor so that the brightest light sources are off to the side and not directly behind the user.
  • Close shades or curtains.
  • Turn off overhead lights or any lights that are directly behind the user.
  • An individual task light may replace other lights, but be sure that it does not shine onto the screen or your eyes.
  • A glare-reducing screen is also an option but be sure it does not affect the overall screen brightness, especially of the on screen whites. Or, if you’re concerned about color calibration, make sure the screen isn’t tinted.
  • Tilting the screen slightly downward also helps in reducing reflections but may not be ergonomically correct, unless you raise the monitor up.
  • A hood, such as the one offered by Photodon, is a great solution, especially if reducing the amount of light is not possible. (thought I might just throw that in.) A hood can effectively reduce the amount of ambient light from the sides and above from reaching the surface of the screen.

Visit our website for even more ways to help reduce bothersome screen glaring. We offer many sizes of Screen Protective Films, (available in Anti-Glare) and Monitor Hoods.

Protect Your Screen from Every Day Usage

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Keep your flat screens protected and looking like new!

Most damage to Flat Panel/LCD screens come in the form of scratches or wear to the antiglare coating applied to the outermost surface.
One type of anti-glare coating consists of thousands of microscopic transparent plastic balls fused into the polarizing surface. Because this coating is non-repairable, it is good reasoning to consider protecting your investment. It is no fun having to look at or through a scratched or worn screen.
Photodon.com offers a great selection of Screen Protective Films at reasonable prices and great customer care.

Protect Your Screen from:

  • Screen Cleaning Errors
  • Surface Scratches
  • Environment – Sand, Dirt and Dust
  • Ink and Permanent Markers
  • Finger Prints

Another thing that we hear about is where people have used Windex on there screens and have partially removed the antiglare coating of the display. Avoid this by installing one of our Protective Films. These films and your other displays can be cleaned with our specialty screen cleaners.

Two types of glare reduction

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Some people are not able to reduce the overall brightness of their monitors enough through the screen controls (brightness is turned all the way down and still too bright). These persons are looking for glare reduction in the sense that the brightness of the screen is too strong. The anti-glare function of the Photodon LCD protective films is to reduce the reflections off the surface of the screen, not to reduce the overall brightness of the screen, we refer to this as glare reduction. A film that would reduce the overall brightness of the screen would be more like a neutral density filter used in photography. In photography a neutral density filter is used to reduce the overall brightness of a scene or in some cases to reduce the brightness of the sky, thus avoiding a washed out image. This is accomplished by placing a neutral density filter in a holder in front of the lens as you take the photograph. Our LCD protective films do reduce the overall brightness of the screen, but by only approximately 10 – 12% for the antiglare and only 8% for the crystal clear film, not a noticeable amount.
