Screen Cleaning Kits

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The screen cleaning kits offered in our store are carefully and thoughtfully put together. Here at Photodon.com, we take in consideration that sometimes it’s a little bit easier for our customers if the best microfiber cloth is placed with the best cleaner; a match that has already been successfully tested and tried by us and others.

Using paper towels, tissue, or any linty material is definitely an improper cleaning method of your screen. Not only can these materials leave behind an unpleasant lint trail all over your screen, but on screens such as LCD’s and screens with anti-glare coating, they can be abrasive causing scratches.
Using the proper microfiber cloth is crucial when it comes to screen cleaning! You want to be sure that the material is free of or is low lint and is nonabrasive.
The cloths that we include in our screen cleaning kits have been carefully paired up with the screen cleaner they come with. Most of our screen cloths in our kits have a smooth feel to them; some have a suede feel. Both are ideal for screen cleaning as they pick up dust over the screen and move freely/smoothly over the surface. Best part: no linty trail!
For more specific microfiber cloth information see our Which Microfiber Cloth should I Choose” Blog: July 2010.

When it comes to what to actually use to clean your screen, in most cases you can dampen a microfiber cloth with water and it gets the job done. Although for more critical cleaning that will last a little longer, we have hand selected some of the best screen cleaners on the market! Some people ask why it isn’t safe to just use the glass cleaner they already have to clean their screens. Products like Windex that contain ammonia and other harsh chemicals will damage a LCD screen, will leave behind horrible streaking/staining on other materials, and in some cases it will remove any anti-glare coating on the screen which is almost never repairable and very expensive to replace.
The cleaners we offer are specifically formulated to clean highly sensitive materials and screens with anti-glare coatings. You won’t find ammonia or isopropyl alcohol in our cleaners! No streaking, no staining! In fact, our Photodon Ultra cleaner is made of natural/herbal ingredients. Although safe and gentle like water, this cleaner will remove streaks left behind by other cleaners, dust and finger prints.

We are proud to offer these screen cleaning kits that we do as we’ve worked very hard to put only what you really need in them. Most come with a re-closable bag to keep your cloths clean and keep the instructions/screen cleaning tips handy. Need Screen Cleaning Tips?

Which Microfiber Cloth Should I Choose?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Often times you hear about how wonderful a microfiber cloth is but seldom do you know exactly what to use it on/for.

You’ll find that the biggest key factor when choosing a cloth is the “lint” level of the material. Cloths that are tightly woven or looped woven, normally are a low lint cloth. These are ideal for screen cleaning, or delicate surface cleaning.

Cloths that have cut fibers instead of loops tend to be quite linty as they are sheered at the ends.
This material is best used on general surfaces such a counter tops, equipment polishing, dusting and so on.

Below is a table that will hopefully help clarify the difference between the different weaves and textures.

Texture Feels like Lint Factor Uses
Silky Textures Silky, Smooth, Fine Very low lint. Loop, tight weave Lenses, Large & Small Screens, Glass, Jewelry, CD’s, DVD’s, etc.
Suede Textures Suede like, Soft, Thick Low lint. Better after one wash Critical screen cleaning, Cameras, Glass, GPS’s, etc.
Terry Textures/Large Loop weave Terry cloth towel, soft, thick Very linty due to the cut-weave material General hard surfaces, Automotive, General cleaning
Pattern Textures Depends on the material: some are the silky or more of thick cloth like the suede Very little to very low lint with most Cloths with a pattern (ex: our “Bubble” cloth #355-1212-2) usually have a better ability to scoop up dust and debris since they have a “groove” to lock the particles in to.

One of the coolest characteristics about the microfiber cloth is that you can clean a smudgy/dirty surface with your cloth dampened by only water! And they’re so eco friendly because they’re washable! Cutting down on waste, helping you to help save the planet!

We do offer many different microfiber cloths, but it’s up to you in which you like best.

Our Goal

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Here at Photodon.com, we strive to offer quality products at affordable prices.

Before a product is added to our store, we test it in our offices, in our workshops, at our homes, at our family and friend’s homes; sometimes we even send out samples in exchange for consumer feedback.
If it doesn’t fly with us, we won’t even try to sell it to you! And believe me, we’ve tested quite a bit of product!
What we put forward is what we know to be the best, and our customers deserve the best.

There are a lot of businesses out there that offer specialty cleaners, microfiber cloths, monitor hoods, and screen protective film. So we’re working hard to give you good enough reason to shop our store and keep you coming back.

Although good products at good prices is only “a piece of the pie”. Our customer service staff is friendly and accommodating. If you ever have a question or concern about a product, your order, or how we do business, a real, live, person will answer your call or respond to your email.
If there is a problem, we’ll go out of our way to make it right.
Your satisfaction matters to us. YOU matter to us. You’re not an order number here! You’re a very important part of how we run our online store and you’ll always be appreciated for stopping by.

We have the ability of fulfilling large orders, and custom orders, but we want to give that small town store feel when you’re doing business with us.

Remember we’re always opened to suggestions! Follow us on Twitter, Like us of Facebook, or contact us via phone or email. We’d love to hear from you.

Everyone Wants to be “Green”

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

These days most of us are looking for ways to do just about everything a little “greener”.
We know it’s the little things that, (in the long run), will make a big impact.

Here at Photodon.com, we’re always looking for more ways to do our part in keeping a cleaner environment.

So if you’re curious as to why the box that we shipped your order in looks like it was used before, it probably was; or why we used newspaper for packaging instead of a plastic mold, we have a lot of people giving us their old papers.
These are our “little things” that we practice to do our part for “greener” tomorrows.

We also want to help YOU do your part so we offer products like microfiber cloths, natural cleaning solutions, and longer lasting screen protective films.

Not everything we offer is as “green” as we would like, so we ask you to be responsible when discarding used products.

Remember to reuse spray bottles, or recycle them where such plastics are accepted.
Use your lens wipes till they’re dry and make sure they’re disposed of in the proper baskets.

We’ve found the US EPA (United Sates Environmental Protection Agency) to be a very good source of information for where to recycle everything from plastics to used electronics! We suggest you bookmark this site as they are a very useful resource on how to care/help the environment.

We follow and feature some great folks who are wonderful advocates for recycling and for the environment, so come check them out on our Twitter and FaceBook pages.

Thank you for following this and all our blogs! Your feedback has been absolutely refreshing and we appreciate the time you take to leave your comments. We hope this week’s blog was useful to you!

History of Microfiber Cloths: Part 1

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Although many of us use the popular “Microfiber” material for cleaning, not too many people understand what makes it so different.
This two part segment will explain how this material is put together and exactly how it gets the job done.

Microfiber was introduced in 1986 and is a variety of polyester that has extremely thin filaments. It is tough, resilient and can be manufactured to extremely fine tolerances, many times thinner than other synthetics. Microfiber has properties of strength, precision and sheerness as well as a phenomenal absorbency that gives rise to so many applications, including an amazing ability to clean and dry surfaces.

The Microfiber material, (specifically polyester), as the sole constituent of cloth, would wear and shed fiber with use. So it is best utilized in combination with another material. It is this combination of materials which gives microfiber its unique characteristics.
Most microfiber consists of a combination of Polyamide (Nylon), a synthetic material that is strong, elastic, and resistant to abrasion and chemicals, and low in moisture absorbency.

Be sure to check out our line of many different Microfiber Cloths and stay tuned for “History of Microfiber Cloths: Part 2” next week.

Photodon Ultra is possibly one of the safest surface cleaner solutions available on the market today. This “Green” screen cleaner is safe for screens with anti-glare / anti-reflection coatings such as those found on today’s computer monitors, HDTV and Plasma screens, but will do much more.

Product #4501

The Photodon Ultra solution is a “100% Green Product” colorless/odorless and has been formulated by a company that respects the environment by creating safe, environmentally friendly products. This cleaner does not contain alcohol, ammonia or vinegar, all of which can affect surface coatings or plastics over time.

This fantastic product is available in many different sizes: 2oz finger tip spray bottle, 4oz finger tip spray bottle , 1 Gallon, or a 5 Gallon Bucket.
We also offer the 4oz size in a kit that includes high quality microfiber screen and lens cloths. This is one of our most popular products at Photodon.com

Using liquid cleaning solutions

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Streaking is caused by not having enough solution on the screen to pick up the dirt that is on the screen. In this case the lack of enough solution is creating a paste or mud, and the cloth is spreading this paste leaving streaks. So the proper amount of solution is important and will vary depending on the amount of surface dirt.

The most recommended method of cleaning your screen is spray the solution onto the cloth, first making the cloth quite damp, then wiping the screen with the damp cloth. This eliminates the possibility of damaging the screen from solution running down the screen and into the frame area. Pros: it is safer method. Cons: you use more solution and less solution actually goes to work on the screen as it is absorbed into the cloth.

Remember a clean screen in much more enjoyable to view than a dirty one! Photodon offers a variety of screen cleaners and microfiber cloths. We offer have put together some very useful screen clening kits for an even better value.

Screen Size, Humidity, Temperature

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Listed are a few factors that can affect the way you clean your screen :

  • Size of the screen
  • Humidity of the room
  • Temperature of the screen surface.

On a small display you can reasonably clean the whole screen at one time.
On a large screen you may want to clean half or a third of the screen at a time.

The lower the humidity of the room the higher the static electricity will be present. This will in part cause more dust/debris to collect on your screen surface.

Trying to clean the whole surface of a flat panel screen that is still warm will result in streaking and the likelihood that you will damage the screen coatings.

Next week will discuss the best techniques in using liquid cleaning solutions.
